It’s early in the morning as the sound of your alarm rips you abruptly from your dream, and you reluctantly arise for another day at work. Each stressful day seems to be blending in with the others as you search for ways to set yourself apart from the rest, in hopes of getting that upcoming promotion or raise for your efforts. Here are some different ways to impress your managers.
Do Your Research
Regardless of what kind of work you do or how long you’ve been doing it, there is always more to learn, so move beyond the training you’ve received and aim to educate yourself as much as possible about the different aspects of your job. Ask yourself why things are done the way that they are and how some procedures might be improved upon. Find ways to be more efficient with your duties and time and how to best prioritize your work items. The more that you can do independently, the less your boss will feel the need to micromanage or oversee your work.
Don’t Limit Yourself to Titles
Just because you are assigned a specific job title with your employer doesn’t necessarily mean that you are limited to those duties. Don’t be afraid to reach for more opportunities and seize the initiative to take on more responsibility if you can. Show that you are not only capable of more but that you are also valuable within the company. Make yourself an asset that the organization needs.
Be a Team Player
Know that within any team, there is always more to be done, so make yourself available to your coworkers in your spare time for any help that they may need. Show that you are willing to take on whatever needs to be done to complete an assignment, even if it isn’t necessarily your job. Not only will your boss be appreciative but your coworkers will, as well.
Dress to Impress
My mother always said, “dress for the part you want, not the part you have.” Take that extra few minutes at night to lay out a professional looking outfit or use a few extra minutes in the morning to try a new hairstyle. Be someone that your coworkers are not used to seeing every day and, most of all, “dress” yourself with a positive attitude.
